I have heard of a building taller than the Empire State building that was planned for mid-town Manhattan in the 1930's, but it was never built. Anyone else know of this?
The building that was to be built on the McGraw Hill site was the Larkin
Building planned in 1926 and was to be 1208' tall - 110 stories - that from
the New York Times of December 18, 1926. The project was to cost $22,500,000
and was projected to provide a rental payback of 3,000,000/year - pretty good!
A scan of the building
from the Times has been sent. In addition, Metropolitan Life planned a
skyscraper which is covered on this web site.
On October 8, 1929 in the New York Times, a project by Charles F. Noyes was
announced to be "on-hold". This project was a 150 story building to be built
on a site between Broadway, Worth, Duane, and Church Streets. This is all I
know about that building.
Newpaper articles announcing new "tallest" buildings were plentiful in 1929 -
articles on their demise were few and far between in 1930!
for those of you wondering about the Larkin tower I made a site answering your questions at http://www.geocities.com/larkintower/.
