I am very much fascinated with the Met Life Tower on which work was stopped
early in the Depression. I would very much like to find sketches or any
information regarding the design of this art deco marvel. This is not the
old Met Life Tower but is located east of that building between 23rd and 25th.
As I live in Germany, and my ability to locate information is somewhat
limited, I would appreciate any information someone could send me.
The building was designed by Harvey Corbett and David Waid. i submitted a photo of it and a copy of the rendering of the intended complete building via e-mail. If it had been completed to its full height, New York would have had a landmark that eclipsed the Empire State Building (and probably would have stolen its fame). But, because the Empire State was called the "Empty Space Building", the Met II was never completed and Met Life never regained ownership of the world's tallest building.
In conclusion to my previously submitted entry on Met II, perhaps Al Smith lobbied furiously with Met Life to "downsize" their tower.
