was in NYC over the weekend and was amazed to see a wild and wacky
new tower at 43rd and 8th. Curvilinear look...seems like two towers
blended together...all arising from two bases: the lower one standard
looking with the upper one misshapen, like something out of THE CABINET

It's the Westin New York Hotel.

information on it and the pictures are great. I've been meaning to head
down to the City; I haven't been there since July. It's ironic, I took a
bunch of 1st time visiting friends to the WTC plaza, and I said, that the
line is too long, let's go up to the top nect time we come down...I just
hope that in light of what happened, we don't have to start building
cities like bunkers, the City has so many buildings that stand out, and
that's what gives it the best skyline in the world.

Days like today make me wish that I could just wake up from a horrible dream. I just came from Sullivan Co.
Community college in upstate New York and I saw for the first time what the NYC skyline looks like w/o the twin
towers. The first thing that came to my mind was "Oh mygod!!, where did they go?" I had seen the horror unfold
on t.v., just like everyone else, and it hit me harder because I'm a native New Yorker. But as the bus I as in
neared the Lincoln Tunnel, I saw the smoke and gaping hole in the skyline. It was for real. The pictures in this
site allow people the world over to see the city of New York and its many beautiful buildings, especially the twin
towers, in all their glory. My deepest condolences go out to all the families who lost loved ones in this monsterous
act( including people in my family who knew firefighters that perished). MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!

What happened last tuesday is simply awful and disgusting.I just can't find the words to express my sorrow to
the the american citizens who have lost relatives and friends in these tragic events. And sadly no words could
ease their pain.Obviously nothing compares to the loss of so many human lives but I really feel that the
collapse of the towers is a huge tragedy too.If you think of how many people used to walk everyday around
those buildings... well, many of them probably had lots of memories bound up with those places and now it's like
someone took a part of their life away. It's painful.I've never been to NYC,but I learned to love it through the
Woody Allen's movies and these days I just feel the need to go there as soon as I can.I'm from Pisa,Italy and I
just can't think of anything as awful as our leaning tower collapsing before my eyes. That's maybe why I feel so
close to all the people that love New York City and its skycrapers.Claudio.

I called one of my friends who was with me at the WTC to tell him that I put an entry into the guestbook here. I
was reminded by him that my memory was not the greatest. He corrected me and told me about the
elevators--we actually had to take two separate express elevators to get to the 107th floor. I just remember the
impressive speed at which we traveled. I guess it took us 59 seconds to get from the 44th(?) floor to the
observation lounge. It's not really that important now. I just wanted to add that my sympathies are extended to
the families and friends of those who lost their lives in New York, Virginia/Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

I have been a constant visitor to this site and it's one of my favorites. I wish to share my thoughts on the World
Trade Center in light of the recent tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001:
The events that occurred at the World Trade Center in New York City were horrific and very tragic. I get upset
thinking about it because on September 18, 1996, I visited NYC with a tour group and I got the opportunity to go
to the WTC. It was around three in the afternoon. I walked through the large courtyard between the two towers,
with its white marble flooring. I remembered its trees, benches, flowers, and art sculptures. When my tour group
and I got to WTC 2, we entered the huge lobby on the first floor and got to the express elevators. In just 59
seconds, the express elevator that some members of my tour group and I took, got to the observation lounge on
the 107th floor. There were spots where you could step down and actually be right there against the window. I
pressed my face to one of the windows and looked down. I pulled out my camera and took some pictures of the
buildings and goings-on down below. I read the plaques and displays all around the 107th floor and I was
impressed with the efficiency and ingenuity it took to build the two WTC towers. In the gift shop, I put a penny
into a machine there, turned a handle, and out came a flattened, elongated piece of copper with a picture of the
Empire State Building stamped on it, which I thought that was pretty amazing. I didnt even realize I just defaced
government property, butoh well. I bought some souvenirs to bring back home with me--a WTC shot glass and
a little plastic New York license plate with the name "Cindy" (my mom's name) on it. On the way down, before
members of my tour group and I got off the elevator, a young black man who was the elevator operator, gave a
brief dissertation and after wishing us well, he said good-bye in a dozen different languages, which I thought was
nicely done.
I visited the mall under the WTC and bought a hat at the WB store and also ate pizza with friends in my tour
group at a Sbarro's there. I recall one of my friends having a pleasant conversation with a man who was eating
pizza at Sbarros. I remember going into the huge men's restroom in the mall and seeing an attendant putting
soap in guys' hands and handing them paper towels. I saw hundreds of people get on and off the subway at the
subway station underneath the WTC amidst all of the hustle and bustle, as the rush hour was in full swing. I
know the tour group and I spent about three hours at the WTC and the mall underneath.
Those in my tour group and I really enjoyed my time there and I will always remember that, even more so now.
Those are the memories I choose to keep and I can look at my pictures I took and reminisce. If a memorial is
not built at the site of the WTC, I hope they build a brand new set of towers there or maybe an even taller
buildingjust to let people similar to those terrorists know that they may knock us down, but we will get back up
and rebuildrebuild lives and structures. In any event, I thought I'd reflect for a few moments.

My grandfather, Giuseppi Potenzano, was a skiled worker from Palermo, Italy.
He emigratred to NY at the start of the last century
and did decorative painting & gilding on a number of great American buildings,
Grand Central Terminal and the Chrysler Building among them.
His descendants are thrilled that there is such a renaissance of interest in
these great works. Thanks from all of us for all the interest that
preservationists and individuals have shown

You have a well organized site on the development of skyscrapers in New York City.
It is a worthy complement to my site, which covers the development of the highway,

DRAFTS, NOISE, TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS!!!!
Do you want to eliminate them???? FABflow can....
All of these large buildings (as well as any small building) have inadequacies
controlling indoor air quality. Complaints from tenants typically are about
NOISE, DRAFTS, & TEMPERATURE.
FABFLOW Fabric Air Diffusers eliminate these complaint calls. You will be the
hero of all your tenants. You will have a solution for their complaints.
Check us out at www.fabflow.com
Thanks....

OK, I'd normally send blatant commercial adverts like this to kingdom
come, and remove them from the guestbook (according to the no-advertising
policy of the site -- well, I hope there is one such policy held
;^)), but this once I'll let it stay, if for no other reason than for
its curiosity and entertainment value.
A "hero of all your tenants" -- how many know a landlord/ette that would
qualify for such title, rather than trying to save as much as possible in
maintenance costs... ;^) ED

What is going on with the new Time Warner headquarders that was to be built at
Columbus circle? How is the buy-out of Time Warner by AOL going to effect this?
From the few articles that I have seen, this was to be one of the largest
construction projects in the city in a long time. When completed, this complex,
was to equal Rockefeller Center.
See the Columbus Centre entry. Don't
know about the AOL merger's effects, but I guess the deal would go on
as planned anyway. ED

My e-mail address should be an indication of just what an obsessive admirer
I am of the Chrysler Building. I have discreetly toured the building dozens
of times and I collect every kind of information that I can find. Please
update your building description to correctly place the original observatory
level at the 71st floor, actually above the Cloud Club (Floors 65/66). My
last trip to the building in Sept.99 found the original decor of the Club
completely gutted to allow for new tenant plans. It was a very sad discovery
to say the least. If anybody would like to talk about their mutual admiration
for the Chrysler or share information please get in touch. I will reply later
in January.

Been meaning to ask: Just what is that striking new skyscraper under
construction on (I think) 42nd Street? It's the one clearly visible as
you approach the city from Hoboken via the Lincoln Tunnel.
I suppose you mean the Condé
Nast Building at Broadway and 42nd -- the last time I drove up the
Lincoln Tunnel the building was still behind the high streetside
division walls and not visible at all... ED

I am overwhelmed and delighted by this terrific site. The research you
have done is most enlightening, and the photos are tops (figuratively and
literally)--shots I've always hoped someone would take.
Thanks for information I never had before about my favorites--City Bank
Farmers Trust, American International, and No. 500 Fifth Avenue (didn't
know its other name or its close relationship to the Empire State Building).
I fell in love with them as a child and have been privileged to see them
many times. In my younger days I even made it to the top of the Woolworth
Building--what a thrill.
Congratulations on the creation of this beautiful and informative site.

This page is worth all the work that's gone in to it and more. As an architecture
student at Georgia Tech (and I've been to NYC a good three dozen times), I've
found familiarity with some of the major works in the City borderline invaluable.
I think it would be pertinent perhaps even to provide a short historical context
for each building. This page is at the very LEAST immensely enjoyable - keep up
the good work!!!

Hello there,
this is an absolutely SUPERB site (only bad thing, the image links didn't work :-( ).
Ever since I was a young boy skyscrapers have fascinated and mesmerized me by their structure and architecture.
Living in Sweden I don't get much chances to see it in person but when I was in Chicago some months ago I got to
adore Sears Towers and John Hancock in person. I haven't been to NY yet but I know that someday I WILL be there.
Keep up the outstanding work!

Oasis fans out there - stay MADFERIT!!
Mad or not, the truth is, even when Noel was was a roadie for
Inspiral Carpets (he, for example visited the Finnish Ilosaarirock in 1992 in
that 'function'), the Brit indie pop scene had been full-fledged for years,
even popular (The Stone Roses, The Charlatans). Yet, when Oasis sprung up
from nowhere in 1994, suddenly the forebearers were forgotten and Oasis was
strangely credited for the popularity of the genre -- despite their somewhat
monotonous output. They've made little go very far.... ED

Love your site! I'm a native ny-er obsessed w/skyscrapers.
American Radiator is one of my faves. Been reading about it being renovated into
a luxury hotel. What have you heard?
I recently went to a seminar/slide show on the Grand Concourse and the Art Deco
Society of NY's effort to establish that area as NY's 1st Art Deco historic
district. Do you have or know of a mailing list for other upcoming architectural
events in NYC area?
I thought that the Radiator hotel project went down? Unless there of
course has been a revitalization of hotel plans in the last coupla years.
No, I'm afraid that being situated in Europe at least not improves my chances
of knowing of such activities. My best chance to get informed might be a
month-old Sunday issue of NY Times read in the local library... ;^)
I believe there should be website(s) for such info out there. Or? ED

This is an unbelievable good site about skyscrapers! The most excellent thing
is that it has introduced some not so famous buildings (eg. 55 Water Street and
Solow Building). The classical Art Deco buildings and the massive or even over
size international style buildings are almost unique in New York (I cannot find
similar buildings in Hong Kong, althought people here always proud of some
newly-built skyscrapers here). However, it seems some buildings have not been
included in this site (some classical, multi set-back new york style buildings).
I hope they can be introduced later.
