There are some good performers in the cast, starting with the appealing Trini Alvarado,
who, as Anne, retains the bright talent she revealed as a very young girl in Elizabeth
Swados's "Runaways."
Frank Rich, The New York Times, 10/14/85
As Anne, Trini Alvarado at first irritated me with her brattish precocity; but then
most Annes do, and I imagine even the original might have had much of the same initial
effect. But as the story cast its awful pall, Miss Alvarado rose to its tragedy, and
made a touching, heroic figure.
Clive Barnes, New York York Post, 10/14/85
Dear Anne: They've made a completely unnecessary musical out of that beautiful diary
you kept [...]
I must tell you, though, that a pretty young actress named Trini Alvarado plays you as
ardently as circumstances permit, and sings her songs attractively.
Douglas Watt, Daily News, 10/14/85

The leading role is radiantly played by Trini Alvarado, who displays promising talent
in representing Frank's brilliant, beautiful and indomitable spirit. Directed by
Arthur Mazella, she glides from playful coquette to terrified victim.
Miriam Rubenstone, USA Today, 10/15/85
Trini Alvarado has a vivacity as Anne -- the material does not give her a chance to
develop a full characterization.
Howard Kissel, Women's Wear Daily, 10/15/85
Responding equally to the demands of the spoken text and numerous songs, Trini
Alvarado creates an appealing portrait of the sensitive, mercurial, and impulsive
young diarist.
John Beaufort, The Christian Science Monitor, 10/21/85
