I'm trying to locate details of a building which I believe used to be called the Huntingdon Hartford building. It was (I believe) located in Manhattan, and probably built in the 60s or early 70s. By Manhattan standards, not particularly tall, with a blank facade featuring portholes up the side and across the top. I am working from memory and my memory is not too good. I believe it was a museum housing American art when first opened, but probably doesn't any more - perhaps the building has been torn down?
I'd appreciate any details which you may have of such a building.
The building is 2 Columbus Circle. Here's a short article from today's (20 Jan.)
NY Times:
Making a Pitch for the Dahesh
Juliet Hartford, the 27-year-old daughter of the supermarket heir
Huntington Hartford, is spearheading a letter-writing campaign in support of
selling the mostly windowless structure he built at 2 Columbus Circle. She wants the
city-owned building to go to the
Dahesh Museum, which specializes in 19th century European art. It has been
bruited about that one of the rival bidders for the city-owned building is Donald
Trump, who has a hotel across Columbus Circle.
Ms. Hartford said Prince Rainier, Brooke Astor and magazine heir Christopher Forbes
were among those who had sent letters to City Hall. She said that the Dahesh is
"perfect" for her father's building. "He liked their kind of art," she said.
So far, Ms. Hartford said, the only replies from City Hall have been form
letters.
You might also have an answer to my question, which is what was the name of Huntington Hartford's restaurant on E 52nd St. NY. My husband worked for him at a NJ chain that he owned and we had dinner there, but I can't think of it's name. There was a bar on ground level and the restaurant was downstairs. We were there a night that he hosted dinner for many Miss America aspirants.
Do you know how to contact Juliet Hartford?
