Completed 1891, architect William B. Tuthill. Steel magnate Andrew
Carnegie built it to house the Oratorio Society. The building, renowned for its
acoustics, was opened 9 May 1891; Tchaikovsky conducted the opening concert.
Between 1892-1962 the N.Y. Philharmonic Orchestra was housed in the building.
Under threat of demolition, it was saved by civic action and restored in
1986, partly paid by the construction of the Carnegie
Hall Tower, which uses the Hall's air-rights.
Building represents Italian Renaissance.
