I am doing a study for work and I was wondering you you knew why we
refer to a multi-story building as one that has "stories" instead of
levels or floors. For example the Empire State Building has 100 stories;
or is a 100 story building.
Where did the reference as a building with X number of stories come
from?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The American HeritageŽ Dictionary of the English Language:
"Middle English storie, story, from Medieval Latin historia,
picture, story (probably from painted windows or sculpture on the
front of buildings), from Latin, history."
Oxford Current English Dictionary: "historia history (perh.
orig. a tier of painted windows)" ED
