Rebecca,
I know this isn't a very intense study, but in the book "Skyscrapers" by Judith
Dupre', there's some helpful tidbits about the Flatiron.
You can find it at a Borders - the book is about 2 feet tall - you can't miss it.
I passed the Flatiron building on 23rd Street every day when I was in college in
the late '70's. Since it's not terribly far from the School of Visual Arts, maybe
you can inquire there.
I remember visiting a costume and jokes shop there. Several businesses are on
the ground floor. Once or twice, I used the building as a landmark to meet up
with friends, but that was a mistake due to the unusually high winds around the
building. It's known for that.
